Civilians Disperse After Shots Heard on the Streets of Harare

Shots were heard in the streets of Harare, Zimbabwe, as local military dispersed crowds on August 1 when anti-ZANU-PF protesters expressed their discontent at the party’s election win.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi told media that the army had been deployed to "ensure that law and order is maintained … [and] that peace and security prevails, The Zimbabwe Mail reported. According to reports from Sky News, at least one civilian was shot dead and army helicopters were also spotted in the skies.

ZANU-PF won two-thirds of the seats in parliament, beating rival party MDC Alliance, the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation tweeted, and early results indicated ZANU-PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa was in the lead to win the presidential election.
