Two of Speakers' Corner's veteran Orators appear here.
SPEAKERS' CORNER in the north-eastern extremity of London's Hyde Park is actually quite close to old-times TYBURN, formerly a place of public execution. Legend has it, that before they were put to death, the "Tyburn martyrs" made a loud, vocal affirmation of their faith ~ the origin of 'speaking out' in this place.
The area became the focus for all manner of gatherings of protest and unrest. Violence and public disorder helped provoke the UK government to provide a 'safety valve' in the form of a 'designated area', the provison included in a 1872 Act of Parliament. Now, dissident and deviant viewpoints could be monitored.
"I remember being shocked when my autistic friend Stephen, who referred to himself as a 'Tyburnite' ~ I remember the shock when he explained that my 'freedom of speech' was not in fact a ‘right’ ~ merely a tradition," recalls long-time orator HUE, who is seen ‘giving forth' on this video.
"I'm finding that the brain impairment caused by psychiatric drugs is causing me no end of frustration, and I get so friggin angry!"
The one here, A CULTURE OF VIOLENCE, is from TwentyTwelve. "Maybe the deterioration wasn't so bad then," suggests Hue.
