Wrestler Bajrang Punia registered history on Sunday after defeating Japan’s Takatani at wrestling 65 kg category to clinch India’s first gold in the 2018 Asian games campaign in Jakarta.
Bajrang won the gold medal defeating Daichi Takatani of Japan 11-8 in the final to give India its first gold of the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta.
“I dedicate my Asian Games gold medal to late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee,” Bajrang tweeted after his win.
Later on Monday, Narendra Modi acknowledged the star wrestlers’ dedication, he wrote on Twitter, “Yesterday, one of our athletes, Bajrang Punia won the gold(our first in 2018 Asian Games) He dedicated the medal to Atal Ji. I do not think Bajrang would have had the opportunity to closely interact with Atal Jo but such is Atal Ji’s respect that every Indian is inspired by him.”
