More earthquakes hit Indonesian island of Lombok

Footage shows dust and rubble tumbling down Mount Rinjani in Indonesia this morning (August 19) after two earthquakes hit the region in quick succession.

The shocks on the island of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province, struck at 10am and 11am local time - sending terrified locals fleeing to safety.

They measured 5.4 SR and 6.5 SR. The first earthquake occurred at the epicentre 25 kilometres northeast of East Lombok with a depth of 10 kilometres on Sunday at 10.06 in the morning local time. Then the second earthquake with a strength of 6.5 SR with an epicenter 32 kilometers northeast of East Lombok NTB at a depth of 10 kilometres at 11.06 am.

Head of the Indonesian Center for Information and Public Relations at the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said the impact of the first shock had caused landslides on Mount Rinjani.

There were no fatalities because Mount Rinjani National Park is still closed after the devastation caused by previous quakes. There are no community and tourist activities inside Mount Rinjani. However, Search and Rescue officers (SAR) will check the area later.

The BNPB Command Post has analyzed and confirmed the impact of the Lombok earthquake on the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD). Earthquake shocks were felt hard for 4-8 seconds, in East Lombok, North Lombok, West Lombok and Central Lombok Regencies.

Moderate shaking for 4-6 seconds was felt in Mataram City, Denpasar City, Jembrana, Karangasem, Badung, Gianyar, Bangli, Tabanan, Klungkung and Buleleng.
