Police forcibly pushed back against escalating protests at Brazil’s National Museum in Rio de Janeiro on September 3, after the building was destroyed by a fire the previous day.
Police used riot gear and tear gas as angry protesters attempted to scale the gates and enter the museum compound.
Local reports said the 200-year-old building, which housed one of South America’s best natural history and historical collections, lacked a sprinkler system and suffered “years of financial neglect.” Credit: Pedro Portella Macedo via Storyful
