Beloved country singer Tammy Wynette lied her way through an unhappy marriage with George Richey and drowned out her misery with a pill addiction that eventually led to her untimely death.

Now, REELZ’s new docuseries Autopsy: Tammy Wynette, is looking back at the musician’s dark past and tragic love life. In the show, Wynette’s two daughters speak out about the singer’s abusive relationship and give shocking details about her sad last days.

“She told me that her and Richey had gotten into an argument and that he had beat her and that they had to figure out a way to cover it up,” says Jackie Daly, one of Wynette’s daughters, in the show teaser.

Wynette chose to lie to reporters and say she had been the victim of a violent abduction—rather than admit it had been Richey who had left her with a fractured cheekbone.

Despite the beating, Wynette stayed with him.

“Their marriage in general was more one of a business arrangement than it was anything else. And I saw her two weeks before she passed away—she was very emotional, she was crying, she told me that she and Richy had been unhappy for a long time, but there wasn’t much she could do about it,” adds Georgette Jones, another of Wynette’s daughters, in the clip.

“It was the last time that I saw her and I just remember her holding on to me at the door,” says Jones between sobs.

Autopsy: Tammy Wynette airs Sunday, September 9 at 9 ET / PT on REELZ.
