Quail are social birds that gather in groups called "coveys." As many as 10 to 30 birds may form a covey in which they forage (look for food) and roost (rest) closely together. The female quail is called a "hen". ... The baby quail is called a "chick". Quail eggs hatch after 23 days of incubation. Chickens, on the other hand, are a subspecies of the red junglefowl known scientifically as Gallus gallus domesticus. As its name indicates, the chicken is a domesticated fowl. They belong to the same family as quails and Old World pheasants. ... Chickens are also reared in poultry farms for their meat and eggs. Quail lay well for the first year and often the second and although most books suggest they will live for only 2 years, I have found mine to last 3-4 years. The Nest. Most quail species, such as the California quail (Callipepla californica), bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) and Montezuma quail (Cyrtonyx montezumae) scratch out hidden hollows in the ground under tall grasses or low-growing brush, against a tree trunk or near rock formations. After seeds and grains, a major part of their diet comes from different types of plants, leaves, fruits and vegetables. A proper quail's diet should contain about 20 percent of vegetables, fruits, leaves and other roughage compose. They will also eat berries and other fruits, if you provide them
