China will never pursue hegemony.
This is what President Xi Jinping told the Chinese public on Tuesday,... as global concerns simmer over the country's growing influence on the global economy.
"China's development poses no threat to any country. No matter what stage of development it reaches, China will never seek hegemony."
Marking 40 years of market reforms,... President Xi reiterated China's commitment to a multilateral trading system,... and pledged to further open up its economy.
However, missing from his 90 minute speech were any new initiatives to counter China's slowing economy and trade frictions with the U.S.
The Chinese leader urged support for the state economy and the development of the private sector,... and said China would expand efforts to open up and ensure the implementation of major reforms.
He also praised the country's recent achievements, giving special credit to former leader Deng Xiaoping,... whose reform 40 years ago, according to Xi, saved China from the brink of economic collapse following the Cultural Revolution.
During the ceremony,... 100 individuals were also recognized as pioneers of reform. They included former NBA star Yao Ming and billionaire Alibaba founder Jack Ma.
During the ceremony, President Xi also emphasized the absolute rule of the Communist Party and its upholding of Chinese sovereignty.
