Starting this year, German citizens who do not fit biologically as either male or female can legally be registered as a third gender or "intersex."
The new law was adopted last month and the "intersex" now appears on official documents, such as birth certificates.
Previously, those who considered themselves neither man nor woman was to leave the gender entry blank.
But LGBT campaigners say the new law does not go far enough, as it requires a doctor's certificate proving a person is intersex.
They say it should be easier for such people to register the gender they identify themselves with.
