In a speech to mark the 40th anniversary of a call from Beijing to end military confrontation across the Taiwan Strait, President Xi Jinping said China will try its best to achieve “peaceful reunification” but he did not rule out the use of force if needed. Responding to Xi’s speech, Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen said the self-ruled island would not accept a “one country, two systems” arrangement.
