Bluefin tunas are known to be expensive, but a New Year's auction in Tokyo over the weekend saw numbers reach new highs.
Sushi chain owner and self-proclaimed Japanese "Tuna King", Kiyoshi Kimura, paid a record three million U.S. dollars for a Bluefin weighing 278 kilograms.
The purchase is nearly double the previous record set six years ago.
Kimura said he was surprised by the price this year, but didn't regret opening his wallet.
