Scuffle broke out between Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Trinamool Congress’ workers on Tuesday after the Left-sponsored strike began in West Bengal. The police and protestors clashed in Asansol. The agitators blocked roads and railway tracks at various places in West Bengal. The Mamata Banerjee government had, however, made elaborate arrangements to thwart the strike. Train services came to a halt in Madhyamgram, Hasnabad-Bongaon, Krishnagar, Duttapukur and Lakshmikantapur stations under Sealdah division. At Sodepur in North 24 Parganas, protesters threw banana leaves on the overhead wires to disrupt train movement. Trains were also blocked in Samudragarh station of East Burdwan district.
Police resorted to baton charge in Srirampore in Hooghly district as they tried to remove roadblocks. Scuffles also broke out in Barasat and Belgharia in North 24 Parganas district.
