Carol Channing Dead at 97 According to her publicist, Channing died from natural causes at her California residence. Her 98th birthday would have been only two weeks away on January 31. Channing is best known for her leading roles
in the plays 'Hello Dolly!' and
'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.' She won a Tony Award in 1964 for 'Dolly' and received multiple other nominations throughout her career. Channing is also known for being the first solo artist to perform the Super Bowl halftime show in 1970. In 1995, she was honored with
a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tonys. In addition to Broadway, Channing won
a Golden Globe Award and received
an Oscar nomination for her role in the 1967 musical comedy movie, 'Thoroughly Modern Millie.'
