문 대통령 미국 뉴욕주 '3.1운동 기념일 지정 결의안'에 '반가운 소식'
President Moon Jae-in welcomed a declaration by the legislature of New York state designating a memorial day to mark Korea's March 1st Independence Movement, in which citizens rose up in protest against Japanese colonial rule.
On Twitter and Facebook,… the South Korean leader wrote that he is "very pleased," and credited New York Representative Ron Kim for his help in getting the anniversary declared a memorial day in the U.S.
The president said "it is great news coming from thousands of miles away... in the year the nation mark the 100th anniversary of the historic movement and the establishment of the provisional government" of Korea."
He added, the country will make sure the cause and spirit of Korea's national martyrs are remembered.
On March 1st, 1919, when a nationwide march for independence was held, Korean immigrants in New York played a big role in helping to make the demonstration possible.
