Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has fired back at Republicans who criticized her for opposing the border wall with Mexico, saying, “a wall is not what Americans want & never has been.”
Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Saturday posted a tweet asserting her opposition to President Trump's border wall plan.
"A wall is not what Americans want & never has been," she wrote. "In recent Pew polling, almost 60% of Americans oppose a wall. A *record-high* 75% of Americans say immigration is good for the US."
Her post was a response to a tweet by the New York GOP account which stated: "Radicals like @AOC are holding the Democratic Party and our nation hostage. @MaxRose4NY, @DelgadoforNY19, and @ABrindisiNY should fight for a deal that increases border security. It's what the people want!"
The contentious exchange reflects the ongoing conflict between President Trump and Democrats over funding for the border wall which the president has demanded as part of a long-term government spending bill.
However, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi declared Thursday: "There's not going to be any wall money in the legislation."
