1 Bhimashankar is an ancient shrine situated in the hilly regions of the Sahyadri range, in Maharashtra.
2 It is one of the most revered Lord Shiva temples among the 12 existing Jyotirlingas of India.
3 The temple is situated at a height of around 3,250 feet and surrounded by the dense rainforests, hills and waterfall.
4 The name Bhimashankar is said to be originated from the famous River Bhima. The temple is also declared as the source point of this river.
5 It is believed that the original temple was built in the 12th century CE, after which it has undergone many alterations over the time.
6 The temple is a composite of old and the new archaeologist structures. The present Garbhagriha and the Shikhara of this temple are built in the Nagara or Indo-Aryan style.
7 The researchers claim that the major renovations were carried out by famous Peshwas including Chimaji Antaji Bhide Naik, Dikhit Patwardhan, Nana Phadnavis and Raghunathrao Peshwa.
8 The exterior walls of the sanctum are adorned with scenes from Shiv Leela and Dashavataras.
9 This pilgrimage site has lately gained more significance after it was declared as the "Wild Life Sanctuary".
