1 Hidimbi was a demoness and the sister of a cannibal demon named Hidimb.
2 While the Pandavas were on their exile, they passed through a stretch in the forests which was home to Hidimbi-Hidimb
3 Hidimbi spotted the Pandavas and watched them taking care of their mother (Kunti) with full dedication. Whereas, her brother saw the presence of Pandavas as a great feast.
4 Hidimbi grew sore towards her brother and his appetite for human flesh. She appeared before Bhima in the form of a beautiful maiden and expressed her desire to marry him.
5 She revealed her true form after warning him about Hidimb’s intentions and his strength. In a way, Hidimbi actually saved the Pandavas.
6 Later, Bhima got into an enraged combat with the gigantic demon, Hidimb and killed him. He then married Hidimbi for his mother’s wish.
7 She bore a valiant son called Ghatotkacha from Bhima, who went on to become a great warrior in the Mahabharata war.
8 It is believed that Hidimbi couldn’t accompany the Pandavas on their return from exile because of Kunti’s condition. She did Tapasya for ages and eventually attained salvation.
9 There are very few temples dedicated to Hidimbi, but the most famous one is the ancient cave temple in Manali called Hidimbi Devi Temple.
