Bankey Bihari Temple is a famous Hindu temple located in the city of Vrindavan, Mathura.
Lord Krishna in this temple is worshiped in the form of Bankey Bihari. In this name, Bankey stands for “bent in three places” and Bihari stands for “supreme enjoyer.”
This temple was established by Swami Haridas, who was Guru of the prominent singer Tansen.
It is believed that Swamiji himself remembered Radha-Krishna in his Nidhavan and found this idol in front of him.
The black colored idol of Bihariji installed in this temple is the same one which was granted to Swamiji by Radha-Krishna.
As per the folklore, both Radha and Krishna are immersed in this deity of Banke Bihari. The traditional belief related to this temple states that whoever worships the lord in this form will have their prayers answered.
The striking highlight is that it is the only temple where the Mangal Aarti (morning Aarti) is not conducted. The Pujari of this temple once explained that Biharaji is awake late at night for performing Raas Leela and they don’t want to disturb their beloved Krishna while he is resting.
The Bankey Bihari form is believed to have appeared in the month of Margashirsha (November-December). This day is celebrated with great fervor as Vihari Panchami and this year it is occurring on 7th of December.
Another important festival in this temple is Akshaya Tritiya when the Shreechran Darshan (i.e. Darshan of feet) of the heavily decorated deity is held.
Since Vrindavan is the sacred place where Lord Krishna was born and has spent his childhood, every year the Janmashtami festival is celebrated here with great enthusiasm.
