Jauhar (at times spelt as Juhar or Jowhar) was a custom of collective self-immolation that was extensively committed in the Rajput kingdoms after the defeat of the King.
Every ancient Rajput palace had a Jauhar Kund that looked like a huge square shaped tank that was excavated deep in the ground.
After performing significant Vedic rites, the royal queens used to leap into the pyre lit in the Jauhar Kund along with their children and sacrifice their lives.
The roots of this custom are not yet clear, however, the early documentation suggests that the reason behind it was to protect the dignity of female royals of Rajput kingdoms.
The women in the royal kingdoms used to take this step to avoid being captured by the foreign invaders (especially the Mughal) when facing defeat during a war.
This capture used to result in the enslavement of children, rapes of women and slaughter of innocent people. In order to prevent themselves from such a grim fate, the Rajput queens and other noble women had to undertake this frightful action.
Amongst the cited occurrence, the first one to be described in the Persian anecdotes was performed after the 1301 siege of Ranthambhore by Alauddin Khilji.
Whereas, the second and the most popular one was conducted by Rani Padmini - second wife of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, again after being defeated from Alauddin Khilji, but this time at the Chittorgarh fort.
Thereafter, the noble warriors would carry out another ritual wherein they bravely march towards the battlefield to be annihilated by their enemies which in the regional tradition is called Saka.
As per the legend, when the enemy troops ransacked the royal fort after the seizure, they found nothing but a deserted fort that witnessed the valor of the brave Rajputs.
