The Indian government had maintained that the Delhi gang-rape victim Damini had to be taken to Singapore for the better facilities it has for intestinal transplants. But doctors here in Gurgaon's Medanta Hospital have shown they are capable of intestinal transplants here in India itself.
Last November itself they had successfully transplanted the intestines of a 30-year-old man. A team of 30 doctors conducted the 10-hour surgery on the patient Himanshu Singh who had a rare disorder that made it necessary to remove his small intestines. Himanshu had to wait three years for a suitable donor.
