Hospitals are fast turning into horror dens in India. Medical negligence in Bengal is back in focus. Denied admission by two government hospitals, 40-year-old Usha Devi died in Kolkata after giving birth to twins on the pavement despite possessing government health cards. Already in a serious condition, she was made to travel back and forth between the two hospitals with her husband. The first of the twins, born outside the Chittaranjan Sevasadan nursing home, was with the couple when they approached the Sambhunath Pandit Hospital for help. The second baby was delivered on the pavement outside Sambhunath hospital. Usha Devi died shortly after giving birth to the second baby. The West Bengal government has formed an inquiry committee to look into why the woman was denied admission to hospitals. But the hospitals on their part have denied any negligence.
