India News : Rahul's Pune tour began with interactions between him and Congress activists from 22 districts at the Balewadi sports complex on the outskirts of Pune. Apart from discussing the political scenario, they analysed various issues related to party's performance in district councils and municipal corporations in Western Maharashtra. This region has been the traditional bastion of the party but in recent years Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has eaten into Congress's base.
Rahul's meetings with the district chiefs of Congress party were held behind closed doors but sources in the Congress party suggested that there was some discussion about whether the party should get into a seat sharing agreement with the NCP in the Lok Sabha elections. A former state spokesperson of the party said that most district chiefs suggested to Rahul Gandhi that Congress should not make an alliance with the NCP in their districts. In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections Congress and NCP got into an alliance in Maharashtra. Congress contested 26 seats while the NCP fought elections in 22 constituencies. Sources in the party said Rahul assured the activists that candidates will not be finalised in Delhi but will be decided at state level in consultation with state unit of the party.
