The heat and dust over the govt's decision to allow FDI in retail is rising but with little real effect. Congress ally Mamata Bannerjee's 72 hour deadline to reverse the decision expires today and though the WB CM says she will withdraw her ministers from the govt she has indicated she won't quit the UPA. With the BJP also stirring voters but not the govt's resolve, the Prime Minister's gamble appears to be paying off. Apart from the risk of losing coalition allies over the reforms ebbing out, Congress party sources have also expressed the view that despite Mamata Banarjee posturing, the TMC would not like to be seen as siding with the BJP. Even Mamata has accepted that if she pulls out of the UPA the SP and BSP would be quick to shore up the UPA as both parties are in no mood for elections.
