With the north-eastern monsoon at a three-year low, Bangalore is in for a water crisis, and farmers across the state will have to brace for lower yields.
The north-eastern (retreating) monsoon provides 30 to 32 per cent of the state's water needs, and this time the deficit percentage is high: Haveri (58), Dharwad (57), Gadag (50) and Belgaum (48). Bangalore Rural is short by 19 per cent, and Bangalore Urban by 31 per cent. Weather officials consider -19% to +19% normal rainfall. Bangalore Urban is thus facing a deficit, while Bangalore Rural gets by. Overall, Karnataka faces a 28 per cent water deficit, according to data collated by the Indian Meteorological Department's Bangalore centre.
In the post-monsoon season between January 1 and 29, 25 of the state's 30 districts experienced a dry spell. This has directly hit the growth of rabi crops (winter crops harvested in spring).
