The Jammu & Kashmir Government in a report to the Union Home Ministry has controversially addressed Masrat Alam as "Shri Masrat Alam" while saying he is a separatist and was "instrumental" in provoking Kashmiri youth into street protests and stone pelting in a "big way" in 2010.
