"Love and Wine". The Polka Mazurka Lieb' und Wein was written in the spring of 1862 and was announced by Josef Strauss as a novelty for the celebration at st. Anne's festival, which took place on 25 July 1862. At that time, Pepi did not know that he would soon be requested to travel to Pavlovsk by way of st. Petersburg to replace his brother Johann as conductor for the summer concerts. It is conceivable that on account of the Polka's relative difficulty, owing to its rapidly changing dynamics, Josef Strauss had played it through as a sort of general rehearsal before the official premiere at Weghuber. There was much applause at Weghuber for the daring medley of Lieb' und Wein, which also inspired the illustrator of the piano score to create a magnificent title-page.
