In Italy and in the United States there occur: 1) increase in the prescription of tests to estimate the 25-hydroxycholecalciferol blood levels; 2) increase in the number of computerised bone mineralometry carried out for osteoporosis screening and 3) increase of vitamin D prescriptions with the aim of correcting vitamin D deficiency and preventing bone fractures.
None of the three would seem to find justification in the cost-benefit calculation produced by the US Preventive Service Task Force.
