8월 5일부터 국가 폐암검진…30년 이상 애연가 대상
Long-time smokers between the ages of 54 and 74 will be eligible for lung cancer checkups under the national health insurance.
The health ministry says that from Monday, those in that age bracket who have smoked for more than 30 years can receive low dose chest CT's every other year.
The state health insurance will cover most of the cost, with individuals only having to pay up to nine U.S. dollars.
The move comes as part of efforts to raise the effectiveness of treatments for lung cancer, which is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Korea.
