MANILA, Philippines – Protests continue to mar the Confederations Cup in Brazil as riot police clashed with demonstrators near the Maracana Stadium. Police fired tear gas into the crowds and used pepper spray on protesters. The activists were protesting against what they see as excessive use of public funds for stadiums and sporting events, instead of health, education programs and public transport. The protesters also tried to approach the stadium, where Italy were playing Mexico. The Confederations Cup, an eight-team tournament, is considered a warm-up event for next year’s World Cup. --Mornings @ ANC, June 17, 2013
