At least 13 passengers were killed and several others injured after the tour bus they were travelling in rammed into a tractor-trailer near Palm Springs city on Sunday.
According to The Associated Press, the bus was apparently ‘speeding away’ on Interstate 10 when it hit the rear of a trailer. It is still not clear whether the driver , who lost his life in the mishap, was under the influence of alcohol or not.
The accident took place in the wee hours of Sunday, when most off the 44 passengers on board were asleep. In what could indicate the severity of the crash, the front portion of the bus had wedged into the tractor till about 15 metres.
Apparently, the bus 20-year-old bus was not equipped with safety-gear such as seat belts that could have possibly minimised the impact of the collision. Initial reports say indicate that the tour bus didn’t even have a black box fitted into it’s system.
While some among those injured remain in a critical state, others have been released after preliminary medical examination.
