강경화 "日과의 신뢰문제로 내린 결정…한미동맹과는 별개"
South Korea's top diplomat explained the GSOMIA decision is an issue separate from the country's alliance with the U.S.
The remarks were made upon her arrival from a three-day visit to Beijing, where talks with her Japanese counterpart ended without much progress.
"The decision came amid a situation triggered by trust issues between Seoul and Tokyo, and so it's an issue separate from the South Korea-U.S. alliance. This also means there were discussions today on ways to continue boosting and developing the South Korea-U.S. alliance..."
Minister Kang also pointed out, ...South Korea plans to relay that message when notifying the termination of GSOMIA to both Japan and the U.S.
When asked about Tokyo's removal of Seoul from its trade 'whitelist' set to take effect from the 28th,... she said although the two sides have agreed to continue dialogue... the procedures will go on as planned... as South Korea prepares necessary measures.
