Toy makers and local manufacturers of most consumer goods are now banned from using lead in their products. Environment Secretary Ramon Paje issued on Thursday a chemical control order against the use of lead, which he says is so toxic it can damage the nervous system, impair the kidneys and cause hearing loss. Covered by the directive are toys, packaging for food and drinks, school supplies, water pipes and cosmetics. The order also imposes a limit on lead content in paint. The administrative order enforces an over two-decade old law that controls the use of toxic substances and hazardous and nuclear wastes. Mornings@ANC, January 10, 2014
