An increasing number of artists are deciding not to participate in a major art festival in Japan... in protest against Tokyo's decision to remove a statue representing the victims of sexual slavery.
Japan's Tokyo Shimbun reported today that South African artice Candice Breitz notified the Aichi Triennale that she will suspend the exhibition she has there and instead put up a statement of protest.
Japanese artist Fujii Hikaru decided Sunday, for the same reason, not to show his works.
The festival had displayed a so-called comfort women statue but removed it last month, apparently on government orders.
Of the 90 exhibitors, 13 have suspended the display of their works as a result.
