Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips Address
Criticism That 'Joker' Could Inspire Violence.
With the release of ‘Joker’ scheduled for
Oct. 4, critics are already debating the risks
posed by the films inherent violent nature. .
Many are arguing that Phoenix’s
deranged character, Arthur, could be
interpreted as an inspirational character.
When asked to address the concerns, Phoenix
said he believes it isn’t the “responsibility of
a filmmaker” to guide the viewer’s interpretation. .
I don't think it's the responsibility of a filmmaker
to teach the audience morality or the difference
between right or wrong … I think if you have
somebody that has that level of emotional
disturbance, they can find fuel anywhere. I
just don't think that you can function that way, Joaquin Phoenix, to IGN.
Director Todd Phillips also echoed Phoenix’s
lack of concern, saying he believes people will
be able to “handle the message” of the movie. .
The movie makes statements about a lack of love,
childhood trauma, lack of compassion in the
world. I think people can handle that message …

well I could handle it. But imagine if you can't.’
It's making judgments for other people, Todd Phillips, to IGN
