Animator Lawrence Becker explained how he brought Lizzo’s “Truth Hurts” lyric video to life.

“It’s the most satisfying thing ever when the inanimate objects that you just played with for a couple hours suddenly come to life, he explained. “When it’s done and I can watch it, it’s the most satisfying thing in the world.”

Becker is a mixed-media stop motion animator based in Portland, OR. He pitched, designed, and animated a campaign-themed video made of felt for Lizzo’s hit song “Truth Hurts.”

“I pitch ideas for music videos all the time, and that one came up, and—I’m already a huge Lizzo fan,” he explained. “I just was picturing her presidential run. The climate we’re in right now, I mean, it’s just all around you, so it’s hard to not think about that, I guess.”

Becker uses a technique called multiplane animation, which involves placing media on different levels to achieve depth.

“The felt is on different layers,” he explained. “But this a, you know, really old technique used—it’s what Walt Disney used when they were doing Snow White, and, you know, all the major classics were all done on multiplane animation.”

Becker says he completed the video in only three weeks. Since 2013, his professional clients have included ESPN, “Portlandia,” restaurant chain Jack in the Box, and Microsoft.”
