2019 Nobel Peace Prize Is Awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister
Abiy Ahmed Ali.
The 43-year-old was awarded
the prize “in particular, for his
decisive initiative to resolve the border
conflict with neighboring Eritrea.”.
The son of parents from different
ethnic groups, Ahmed's background
is an asset in his calls for unity in
a politically divided country.
Ethiopia is Africa's second most
populous country. It has suffered under
a succession of authoritarian regimes.
When Ahmed took office in 2018,
he lifted bans on political parties,
released political prisoners and held those
accountable who had been accused of torture.
Under Ahmed's hopeful leadership,
Ethiopia is on track to hold its first
multiparty and free elections in 2020.
... this victory and recognition is a collective win for Ethiopians, and a call to strengthen our resolve in making Ethiopia — the New Horizon of Hope — a prosperous nation for all, Office of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, via
