462 Prison Inmates
Released in Largest US
Prison Sentence Commutation.
The non-violent Oklahoma
inmates were released on Monday.
Now is the first day of the rest of your life ... We really want you to have a successful future, Kevin Stitt, OK Governor, via CNN.
The commutations come as an
effort to reduce prison overcrowding
in the state and to "move the needle
in criminal justice reform.".
75% of the released prisoners
are men with an average age
of close to 40 years old.
The prison sentences of the
inmates had been shortened
by an average of 1.34 years.
According to the OK Pardon
and Parole Board, the cost of
keeping the prisoners incarcerated
equates to close to $12 million.
OK Governor Stitt thanked the Department
of Corrections and the "many non-profits ...
working hard to connect our inmates with the
resources they need for a successful transition."
