A wild elephant raided a home in the middle of the night to steal fruit before being chased away by a policeman

Buarai Khamdech, 66, was at home with her grandchild when she was woken up by a stomping sound in Chonburi, Thailand on Wednesday (November 28) night.

She peeked through her window and was shocked to see an elephant at her neighbour's house, where it was chomping through fruit trees.

Footage shows the jumbo walking around the house opposite from Buarai before it trampled some of the garden furniture.

Police Lieutenant Wallop Tassanathanapong received an emergency call from the pensioner. He arrived within a few minutes and chased the jumbo away.

Buarai praised the policeman, who she said had a ''special ability'' to command the elephants.

She said: "Our village is located near the mountain where the elephants live and they always come down and eat our fruits.

"This policeman is the only person who can deal with them quickly.''

The policeman said that he was just doing his job. He said he remained calm so the elephant would not panic and goes berserk.

He said: "Villagers have superstitions and believe that I possess some kind of supernatural skill that can control the jumbos, but actually I'm just a normal policeman.

"I just try to talk to the elephants calmly without scaring them because shouting or making sudden movements might startle them and cause them to hurt the residents."
