江戸五街道のひとつ中山道。東海道よりも大回りのルートですが、当時は多くの往来があった主要街道でした。その中山道にある御嶽宿（岐阜県）は江戸に向かう際、平野部と山間部の間にあり、数々の難所が続く山道への入り口でした。隣の細久手宿までには風情のある石畳の道が今も残され、当時の趣が感じられる区間でもあります。
