美, 3월 이후 실업수당 청구 역대 최다 3300만건...코로나19로 유럽 경제 충격도 우려
The U.S. economy continues to suffer from the coronavirus fallout,... watching its jobless claims soar week-by-week.
In Europe, France saw its industrial production plummet in March as the continent slides into an unprecedented financial crisis.
Yoon Jung-min reports.
Jobless claims continued to swell in the U.S. last week due to COVID-19.
The Labor Department said Thursday that new filings for unemployment insurance hit almost 3-point-17 million last week.
U.S. media say over 33-million people have lost their jobs during the past seven weeks.
That's the highest number of job losses since the Labor Department began collecting data for jobless claims in 1967.
In the meantime, 113-year-old luxury department store Neiman Marcus filed for bankruptcy on Thursday due to mounting debt amid the pandemic.
The high-end brand closed its 43 stores,... and most of its 14-thousand workers were put on furlough.
"It's really the timing of it is interesting because we're in a very difficult period in our economy. And these stores that have been allowed to stay open for a while, may not have the means to do it anymore."
The coronavirus impact is hitting the European economy as well.
France has seen its industrial production fall by over 16 percent in March from the previous month.
The construction and transportation sectors were hit particularly hard,... but production in the medicine sector jumped over 15 percent.
The European Commission has warned of an economic shock not seen since the Great Depression,... saying the Eurozone's GDP could shrink by a record 7-point-7 percent this year.
