반도체 못 구하게 된 화웨이... 미, 생산•IT•자본 전방위 '중국 때리기'
The trade dispute between the U.S. and China that seemed to be settling down last January, has been reinvigorated as the two started blaming each other for the outbreak of COVID-19.
Our Hong Yoo has the details.
The Trump administration has taken an aggressive move in hitting diverse sectors of the Chinese economy.
The U.S. has imposed a new rule on China to block shipments of semiconductors to Huawei Technologies from global chipmakers.
The new rule announced by the U.S. Commerce Department on Friday, gives the U.S. increased authority in licensing sales of semiconductors built with its software and technology to Huawei.
In response, China's national newspaper Global Times said Beijing was ready to put U.S. companies on an "unreliable entity list".
That means U.S. companies such as Apple, Cisco Systems and Qualcomm, in mainland China, will be subject to investigations and restrictions.
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the rule is aimed at preventing Huawei from undermining Washington's export controls.
The U.S. had added the company to the Commerce Department's "entity list" last year claiming that Huawei was spying on its customers.
But experts warn the new rule could also hurt U.S. manufacturers of chipmaking equipment that rely on their sales to Huawei.
The Trump administration has also extended the prohibition on Chinese telecommunications equipment sales in the U.S. for another year.
In the capital market, the U.S. is planning to ban the board of the federal retirement savings plan from investing in Chinese stocks.
