The Kokonuko indigenous community in southwestern Colombia has increased its security measures to protect its territories from the coronavirus. Through medicinal plants and ancient wisdom, they believe they protect themselves against the virus.
Doctors of the community have indicated that smoke from plants such as eucalyptus and pine kill viruses that cause respiratory diseases, including COVID-19. The traditional doctors claim to receive messages from Mother Earth for offerings, to which they oblige in rituals. These offerings are believed to ward off the coronavirus from entering their territories. The indigenous people also use sheep's wool, believed to scare away evil spirits.
