More than five hundred Minnesota National Guard soldiers have arrived in Minneapolis and surrounding areas as protests erupted for a third night over the death of a black man while in police custody.
From New York City to Denver and other cities, protesters are demaning justice for George Floyd after his arrest and death Monday in Minneapolis.
Our Choi Won-jong has the details.
Massive fires light up the Minneapolis night sky as flames engulf burning buildings in the city.
Hundreds even thousands of protestors are gathering on the streets,... and they are asking for justice.
Just a few days earlier, a 46-year-old black male, George Floyd, lost his life as a local police officer forced him to the ground and kneeled on his neck.
"I can't breathe", Floyd said. Words which soon went viral on social media and sparked mass protests all across the U.S..
As protests descended into violent riots, police officers in riot gear fired tear gas into the crowds.
"If they are setting buildings and structures on fire, which are harming the safety of our elderly and our youth, I cannot allow that as chief."
However, while the public, lead by the black community, is calling out police brutality and demanding justice, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has ordered National Guard to intervene and put a stop to protestors' violence.
In Washington, the Trump administration has also called for action.
"And I've asked the Attorney General, FBI, and Attorney General, to take a very strong look and see what went on, because that was a very, very bad thing that I saw. I saw it last night and I didn't like it."
The officers involved have since been fired. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has asked the F.B.I to conduct a federal civil rights investigation while the victim's family has been pushing for murder charges against the police officers.
