A baby giraffe born during the pandemic has been given the name Corona.

The adorable creature was born on April 9 to mother Sophie and father Matadi at the Bali Safari Park in Bali, Indonesia.

Officials closed the zoo in March due to the Covid-19 coronavirus so staff decided to name the calf after the pandemic.

Yohana Kusumaningtyas , a vet who helped to monitor the birth through CCTV cameras, said: ''Two hours after Sophie experienced a contraction, a baby giraffe was born in natural conditions and it is healthy.

'''The mother Sophie shows some positive responses by licking Corona . This is a sign that she shows concern for her baby.''

Sophie’s pregnancy period was around 15 months . Vets and zoo staff regularly checked her condition.

The vet added: ''We provided the best care and quality foods like, carrots, beans and calliandra leaves, during the period of pregnancy until later lactation. Giraffe babies will be nursed rom birth until the age of four months.''
