The 2020 election cycle involves a group of candidates with the most diverse faith backgrounds we’ve ever seen. In 2018, a record number of Muslim candidates ran for public office. If elected, Bernie Sanders would be the first Jewish President. But… would America elect a non-Christian President? Even as a Catholic candidate, JFK faced heavy criticism. Will we see a Jewish or Muslim or atheist President in our lifetime? In this episode, we will seek to examine the ways in which religious background effects electability and how faith is leveraged as an asset or managed as a detriment in political races. With a particular emphasis on the hyper-relevant 2020 Presidential race, we will then take the conversation more local and visit a congressional candidate who identifies with a religious minority.
