The statue of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, a minister in the 17th century court of French King Louis XIV, was defaced in front of the National Assembly in Paris.

Footage filmed on Tuesday (June 23) shows the statue covered in red paint.

Colbert is best known for drafting the Code Noir (Black Code), a legal decree that defined the conditions of slavery in the French colonies.
