Police footage shows the looting of stores in Chicago following the police-involved shooting of a black man late on Sunday afternoon. The footage was shared on social media by the Chicago Police Department (CPD) on 10th August with the message: “This video contains some of the initial video footage of civil unrest and looting incidents from the 001st & 018th Dist.” According to the Washington Post, hundreds of young people looted stores, broke into shopping centers, and fought with officers during Sunday night and into Monday morning. The protests took place in downtown Chicago’s business district. Several activists told The Washington Post on Monday that they were protesting after reports of an alleged police-involved killing of a black man late on Sunday afternoon. However, the police said the reports were misinformation spread on social networks to apparently encourage people to head into the city center to create a disturbance.
