2020 서울안보대화 개막, 코로나시대 안보협력은?
Leading security experts and scholars have stressed the need for international cooperation now more than ever... amid growing competition between U.S. and China and emerging challenges that are increasingly borderless.
That's on the first day of the Seoul Defense Dialogue 2020 which kicked off online amid the pandemic.
Kim Jiyeon has more.
The global security challenges brought by COVID-19... were center stage in this year's multi-national security platform, the Seoul Defense Dialogue... which kicked off virtually for the first time on Tuesday.
The event focused on the changing dynamics of the liberal international order and ways to build cooperation between nations in the COVID-19 era.
In his recorded address, Seoul's Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo stressed the need for stronger international cooperation as the outbreak has had a considerable impact on nearly all aspects of life... including security.
"Despite continued efforts, the world faces concerns about a second wave of the coronavirus outbreak, so there is a dire need for unity and cooperation between nations... now more than ever."
During the event's first session, security experts highlighted the need for the international community to better deal with borderless, non-traditional security issues particularly the global effort to stop the spread of infectious diseases... amid growing competition between the U.S and China.
Experts say such challenges have different characteristics than the traditional security issues involving nuclear and conventional weapons that prevailed during the liberal international order led by the U.S.
The remainder of the event... which runs until Thursday, focuses on non-traditional security threats and the Korean Peninsula peace process.
