Sawan or Shravan, the month of joy has begun. The fifth month of the Hindu calendar began on July 17. Devotees worship Lord Shiva during this month by observing fasts, singing bhajans and doings pujas. Lord Shiva is worshiped on Mondays throughout the year and so Mondays become highly important during the month of Sawan. It is believed that Lord Shiva would bless those who observe Somvar Vrat with good health, help during difficult times and success in life. Many devotees also observe Solah Somvar Vrat (16 Monday fasts) beginning from the first Somvar or Monday of Sawan.
