The Dragon Boat Festival also called the Duanwu Festival will be celebrated today i.e. June 7 this year. Reportedly, the ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan threw himself into a river after being exiled by the king, and then boats set out to rescue him. Therefore, on this day boat race takes place. The boats are decorated with dragon heads and tails. People eat sticky rice dumplings called zongzi during this festival. Even though dragon boat racing has been an important part of the Chinese culture for more than 2,000 years now, it only became an official holiday again in 2008.
